Notes from the School Nurse
Please keep your child home from school if they are sick.
Fevers…Students are to stay home from school with fevers of 100.4F and greater. They may return after 24 hours of being fever free and with no Tylenol/Ibuprofen.
Pink eye and Ringworm…Students are able to return to school 24 hours after starting an antibiotic. Please provide a doctor’s note for student to return to school.
Head lice…Students with nits and live lice are able to attend school. If a student has live lice, their parent will be called, and they must have treatment with an insecticidal drug or prescription from a doctor before returning to school.
Medications…It is a Wichita Public School District policy that medications can be given at school only with a written request from the parent of the student and signature from the doctor. This includes prescribed and over-the-counter medications. The school nurse must review all medication requests prior to initiating the medications at school. It is the responsibility of the parent to assure that the medication and dosage in the container is the same as what is on the affixed prescription label. The school nurse will delegate and train a non-nurse school employee to administer the medications when the school nurse is not available. If the medication has not been reviewed by the school nurse and delegated to a non-nurse school employee, it is the parent’s responsibility to administer the medication to the student. Any changes in medication dosages or administration schedules will require a new written physician order, parent request, and a new labeled medication container. All medications are locked up at the school.
Please note: medicated or non-medicated cough drops, medicated chapstick, and medicated lotions can not stay with a student in the classroom. It must be kept in the health room with a note from a parent giving permission for it to be given to your student. Staff is not able to put sunscreen on students at any time.
