The gating criteria used by the Wichita Board of Education were approved on Aug. 20, 2020. Based on guidance by the Kansas State Department of Education and the Sedgwick County Health Department, the WPS gating criteria includes four different data points. The primary data source cited below is being used at the recommendation of the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD).
This brief summary illustrates the source of data for each indicator. Data is reviewed continuously, and this summary source will be updated each Friday following the update of the primary data source by the Sedgwick County Health Department.
NOTE: The examples in the illustrations below do not represent current data, but they do represent the reporting instrument. The document you see embedded on this page does represent the current gating criteria analysis. Find the current data from its original SCHD source here (click on Covid-19 Metrics Table about half way down the page).

Student Absenteeism
Student Absenteeism - Student absenteeism compared to building level daily average absenteeism rate in 2019-20.
Average daily attendance, per building, compared to each building’s average daily attendance rate from the 2019-20 school year. This data changes daily based on school attendance. The snapshot here is for all students. The school in the “other” category is Little Early Childhood Center.

Two Week Percent Positive
Percent Positive – Two-week county percent positive case rate.
The data monitored for this indicator are located on the Sedgwick County Health Department’s Business Recovery and Reopening document (LINK: https://www.sedgwickcounty.org/covid-19/covid-19-metrics/). This is the resource recommended by SCHD to all Sedgwick County school districts for use in evaluating their gating criteria. This document is updated Tuesday and Friday. This WPS snapshot will be updated after each Friday’s update from SCHD, and will change each week based on both new test data as well as the update of previous week’s test data.
Information on how SCHD calculates information included in this document is on the SCHD web site at https://www.sedgwickcounty.org/covid-19/covid-19-metrics/data-source/
Specific data calculation – Because SCHD’s report publishes weekly data, in order to calculate the two-week county percent positive, you:
- Add the number of “new cases” from the most recent two weeks
- Add the number of “new tests” from the most recent two weeks
- Divide the number of “new cases” by the number of “new tests” to reach the two-week percent positive
-
Two Week Cumulative County Incidence Rate
This data point is drawn directly from the SCHD report, from the row titled “new cases per 100,000 SG residents”. In order to get the two-week figure required by the WPS gating criteria, you add the most recent two weeks.
-
County Incidence Rate Trend
This data point is drawn directly from the SCHD report, from the row titled “new cases”, and the column titled “two-week trend.”
