Garden & Animal Care

For several years, our students have helped operate the Coleman Garden. Students spend time learning about ecosystems, biodiversity, and caring for the world around them. Students tend plants, butterfly gardens, and animals. We also have a beehive which allows students to learn about and work with bees. In the past few years, we have had honey harvested and sold from the beehive. During the summer, students are able to spend time working on the garden and keeping it in great condition ahead of the school year.

Coleman has partnerships with several local organizations and takes field trips to see other efforts to become good stewards of the land. The Coleman Garden has received several grants. One of the grants helped fund a hydroponics garden tower which has been used to grow vegetables inside the school building.

AVID - Nationally Recognized Schoolwide Support

Every student at Coleman is supported through our schoolwide AVID program. We utilize organizational tools such as agendas, binders, and focused notes. Across all content areas, from math to science to art to physical education, our students get hands-on experience with preparing for college and career opportunities! 6th graders learn about organization through our Middle School 101 classes. 7th and 8th grade students can apply to join AVID elective classes for additional support, but every Coleman student benefits from the AVID focus throughout our school.

Coleman is an AVID National Demonstration School -- that means we are in the top 2% of AVID schools in the world! We are the only National Demonstration School in the city of Wichita. We are also an AVID Schoolwide Site of Distinction. Other schools come from around the Midwest to learn from our staff and students.

Verizon Innovative Learning School (VILS)

Our school was selected as a Verizon Innovative Learning School (VILS). As part of this status, each of our students and staff members receive an LTE-enabled iPad. This allows our school to access the internet with or without WiFi. These iPads provide equitable access to web-based resources and support for all students. Additionally, staff members receive training on how to use the iPads to differentiate lessons based on the needs of students.

Another aspect of being a VILS school that we are proud of is our Student Tech Team. This group of students works to support their peers in being prepared for academic and social success. The Student Tech Team conducts tech checks and has put together videos and other resources for the school. These young people are readily available to help staff members with any technology issues or needs.

World Changers

World Changers is a group of students who are actively working to make the world a better place! This group meets regularly to reflect on current issues and discuss what steps young people can take to address areas of concern. The World Changers attend field trips and partner with community organizations.

One of their main activities in the fall semester is attending the Purple Mile event. The Purple Mile is a domestic violence awareness event for Sedgwick County and surrounding areas. It is an incredibly powerful event for the World Changers and for the community attendees of the event. The World Changers create posters for victims who have died as a result of domestic violence in Sedgwick County (or nearby) during the previous 12 months. With their posters, the students stand as silent witnesses for these victims (women, men, & children) during a moment of silence and throughout the event.

After School Program

After School Program (ASP), a partnership with the Greater Wichita YMCA, occurs Monday through Thursday. As part of ASP, students are able to get involved in clubs, receive homework help and tutoring, participate in sports, attend field trips, and more!

ASP allows students to build community with other students at our school. At Coleman, we have clubs for many different interests! There are clubs for crocheting, graphic design, physical fitness, wilderness, and other hobbies! Many of our teachers and support staff help with ASP to ensure students have a variety of options available to them. ASP is available for all students.

Learning About Culture & Diversity

We are proud of the diversity represented in our school! Our student body and staff are a combination of cultures, languages, and traditions from around the world. It is something we are grateful for, and we look for ways to celebrate the beauty and strength diversity brings to our school.

In addition to activities happening throughout the school year, we host Diversity Fest in the Fall and Culture Fest in the Spring. Diversity Fest takes place during the school day and students learn about cultures and traditions from around the world. Cultural dancers perform, answer questions,  and get students up and moving. Students participate in sessions where they can do crafts, play games, and try foods from other cultures. There is even a special lunch menu for the day! Culture Fest is a community partnership night where we invite family and friends to learn about the cultures represented throughout our community!

Robotics & Coding

Our students learn about coding and programming through our technology classes. These classes also provide the opportunity for students to be part of the robotics team. Coleman Robotics has gone to the state tournament a couple of times since the team was started several years ago. Our students are known at competitions for their kindness, care, and excellence. Through robotics, students learn about teamwork, coding, engineering, and competition. These STEM connections help prepare our students for their future careers!

Performing Arts

Coleman students are skilled in so many ways! We love to show off their talent and hard work. From band and orchestra to choir and theatre, students can find their role in the performing arts! Our students have performances in the fall and spring. As part of our programs, our teachers provide opportunities for students to visit other schools and organizations to learn more about performing. Additionally, we work to involve high school students in some of our middle school performances. It is wonderful to see young people embrace showcasing their abilities!
