Which GPA is used to determine class rank or valedictorian?
The unweighted GPA is used for class rank and valedictorian at this time.

Will weighted GPA ever be used for class rank or valedictorian?
At this time, unweighted GPA is used to determine class rank and valedictorian. If the decision is made to change to weighted GPA to determine class rank or valedictorian, it would start with an incoming freshman class to ensure all students have the same opportunity to earn a high class rank or valedictorian status.

Weighted GPA is on the student transcript.

Which courses are weighted in GPA?
AP and IB courses are weighted a full point more than regular courses. Honors & PreIB courses are weighted a half point more than regular courses.

What if I took a course that has a weighted GPA before Wichita Public Schools added weighted GPA?
The weightings are retroactive for the courses currently offered in Wichita Public Schools.

Are any other courses weighted that do not fall in the AP, IB, Honors, or Pre-IB categories?
Yes, a few other courses are weighted like honors courses. They are PreCalc/Trig, Gifted Accelerated courses, and World Language courses level 4 and above (i.e. Spanish, 6, German 4, etc).

Each year principals, department chairs, counselors, and teachers from each high school may submit courses to be considered in weighted GPA.

Who decides which courses are weighted and which courses are not weighted?
Numerous groups gave feedback to determine the list of courses that are weighted. A taskforce including administrators, teachers, district leaders, and others reviewed weighted GPA information from districts across the state of Kansas to decide how the Wichita Public Schools would weigh grades. Before additional courses are added into weighted GPA, these groups will provide feedback to determine the decisions.
