• The Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading competition designed for upper elementary students within USD 259. At Woodman Elementary, 4th and 5th graders are eligible to participate. A sponsor encourages interested students to read books from a specified list of 64 books (16 total books on their assigned list) selected by Library Media & Textbook Services. Questions based on the books are sent to the sponsor in early December and elimination rounds are held at the school using the questions. Students need to be familiar with the events, characters, settings, and authors of the books to be able to answer the questions. The winning team of 4 students from each school competes with other elementary schools in a televised battle on Cox Cable Channel 20 and AT&T U-verse Channel 99 in mid-January of the current school year. The competition also includes an impromptu book talk presented by the team.
