P1216 School Themes
The building principal is responsible for the development of school themes, songs, flags, mascots, and so forth. The principal is particularly responsible for determining that these themes are not offensive to minority ethnic groups within the school.
Administrative Implemental Procedures
- In the opening of a new school, the principal will solicit the assistance of parents, students, and faculty in the development of the school theme.
- Special consideration must be given to selecting and maintaining a theme which will continually unify and develop a feeling of togetherness for all members of the student body.
- If social attitudes change to the degree that existing themes become divisive and offensive to certain ethnic groups within the student body, the principal is responsible for initiating change.
- It will be the responsibility of the principal to determine at what point an existing theme becomes unacceptable, offensive and divisive, and to initiate the procedures for change at that point.
- The principal will utilize the staff and student body to the degree that they are willing to help; however, other agencies such as the university, community groups, human relations commissions, and central office personnel may be called upon for assistance.
