P1502 Use of Religious Materials in Schools
Educational activities are provided which develop respect for different religions, ethnic groups, and the inherent worth of the individual. Moral training by precept and example is encouraged. Religious education or observance is not a function of the school.
Administrative Implemental Procedures
- Administrators and teachers must be aware of, and sensitive to, the diversity of customs and beliefs represented by children in their schools and communities.
- Activities should be provided which emphasize mutual understanding, acceptance, and brotherhood among all ethnic, racial, and religious elements of the human family.
- School programs, e.g., music and dramatic programs, presented during holiday seasons should be structured to present cultural and social rather than sacred emphases. School programs should neither be devotional in nature, nor should they involve students in worship activities.
- Use of sacred writings and/or prayer as a devotional exercise during any school program is prohibited.
- Distribution of religious materials for promotional purposes including books, posters, brochures, buttons, etc., shall not be made to students on school premises.
- Posters or announcements concerning religious activities may be placed on bulletin boards or in other locations with the principal’s approval.
- An invocation, benediction, or other religious observance shall not be included and shall not be part of any graduation exercises or ceremony that is held or sponsored by any school of the district.
