P2131 Tutoring
Wichita Public Schools recognizes the important role that tutors play to support student achievement. Tutors who work with students during the school day must be approved by both the building principal and classroom teacher, and should not disrupt instructional time.
Administrative Implemental Procedures
- Teachers may not tutor their own individual students for pay.
- Teachers may tutor for pay individual students not enrolled in their class if the instruction occurs outside the school day. It is the responsibility of the student’s lawful custodian(s) and the tutor to agree mutually upon fees, which are the sole responsibility of the lawful custodian.
- Tutoring for pay during instructional time by an outside tutor may be acceptable if such a program is not available through the school district. Such a program must be deemed a benefit to the student’s educational development and approved by the superintendent or designee. Space and time schedule shall be agreed upon by the teacher, lawful custodian(s), and the building principal. The student’s lawful custodian and tutor must agree mutually upon fees, which are the sole responsibility of the lawful custodian.
- Private music lessons taught outside the official school day in any Wichita public school requires the approval of facility use by the principal or designee and in accordance with BOE Policy 3450 - Community Use of Buildings, Grounds, and Equipment.
- Volunteer-based tutoring programs may be established at individual schools at the principal’s discretion. All volunteer tutors must follow volunteer registration and screening procedures as outlined in BOE Policy 2125 – Partner and Volunteer Activities.
