P2375 Possession of Firearms on District Property

No person may possess or store a firearm while on property owned or operated by the school district, except authorized law enforcement officers or when authorized by law.

Employees who possess or store firearms while on property owned or operated by the school district, or while engaged in work on behalf of the district are subject to discipline, up to and including termination.

Administrative Implemental Procedures

  1. All buildings must have signs conspicuously posted that prohibit the carrying of a concealed handgun. The signs will comply with the rules and regulations established by the Kansas Attorney General.
  2. No person may possess any firearm while in a building owned or operated by the school district, or in any vehicle owned by the school district.
    1. Any person, other than an employee, in possession of a concealed handgun will be instructed to leave the premises.  If the person does not leave, after being instructed to do so, the person will be considered a trespasser and district personnel should contact the police and/or security for assistance in removing the individual.
    2. Any person, other than an employee, in possession of a handgun not concealed and not in a holster, or in possession of any other firearm, will be instructed to leave the premises.   Police and/or security should be contacted.
    3. No employee is expected to confront a person with a firearm if the employee feels it is a dangerous situation; in lieu of issuing instructions, the employee may contact security and/or the police.
    4. Commissioned law enforcement officers or retired law enforcement officers authorized to carry a firearm by Kansas and federal law are exempt from this provision.
  3. No employee of the school district can possess or store a firearm of any nature, loaded or unloaded, while on property owned or operated by the school district, in a vehicle owned by the school district, in a personal vehicle while being used to transport students, while engaged in the employee’s duties on behalf of the school district, or stored in a personal vehicle on property owned or operated by the district.
    1. This prohibition applies regardless of any permit or license the employee may possess.
    2. This prohibition includes the possession of a concealed handgun, even if the person has a valid Kansas concealed carry license. This prohibition does not apply to the secured storage of a handgun in a vehicle, other than vehicles owned by the school district, so long as the person has a valid Kansas concealed carry license and the weapon is maintained out of plain sight.
    3. An employee who violates this section is subject to discipline, up to and including termination.
