P5311 Exclusion of Persons - Communicable Diseases
The authority to exclude for health reasons is delegated to the principal or their designee by the Board of Education in accordance with the general statutes of the State of Kansas. This policy applies to all students enrolled in and persons working in the Wichita Public School system. (K.S.A. 65-122)
Administrative Implemental Procedures:
- The principal or their designee must exclude from school any student or other person afflicted with a disease presumably communicable. Within the meaning of this rule, principals shall exclude any person suffering from or exhibiting recognizable clinical signs or symptoms of illness such as:
- Sore throat or tonsillitis
- Any eruption of the skin or rash
- Any respiratory symptoms accompanied by fever, or fever alone
- Severe cough or cold symptoms
- Any eruption of the scalp.
- The principal or their designee must notify the parents, guardians, or designated adult named on the student information form by the parent to be contacted in case of emergencies. Notification must be made by telephone or in person by an employee of Unified School District 259. This contact must be recorded and the record maintained in the school.
- The parent, lawful custodian, or designated adult is responsible for responding as soon as they are notified of disease control measures.
- Exclusion will continue until the expiration of the prescribed period of isolation or quarantine for the particular infectious or contagious disease. Control measures are established by the Kansas State Department of Health and Environment and are delineated in Public Health Regulation for the Control of Communicable Diseases published by the Sedgwick County Health Department as cited below:
A child may be excluded for an additional period of time if the principal or other school personnel feel it is necessary for the child's protection or for the protection of other children. A child excluded from school because of any contagious disease shall not attend day care, stores, movies, parties, public gatherings, or be in contact with other children. - Readmission to school must be according to the printed Public Health Regulation for the Control of Communicable Diseases.
