P5330 Health Screening

Vision and hearing screening will be conducted in the school as part of the overall Health Services program. Frequency of the screening will be in accordance with State law, K.S.A. 72-6241-6242 (vision) and K.S.A. 72-6228-6231 (hearing). When appropriate, other screening procedures deemed beneficial to students may be performed in the school health program.

Administrative Implemental Procedures:

  1. Vision screening
    1. Each year vision screening procedures will be conducted for students new to Unified School District 259 (including kindergarten) and students enrolled in grades one, three, five, seven, nine, and eleven. Students known to have vision difficulties and students referred by teachers, parents, and/or physicians will be screened regardless of grade level.
  2. Hearing screening
    1. Each year hearing screening procedures will be conducted for students new to Unified School District 259 (including kindergarten) and students enrolled in grades two, five, eight, and ten. Students known to have hearing difficulties and students referred by teachers, parents, and/or physicians will be screened regardless of grade level.
    2. Under certain conditions, hearing screening services are provided for students residing in USD 259 boundaries who are enrolled in accredited non-public schools (K.S.A. 72-6229). These services are coordinated between the administration of the accredited non-public school and the Health Services Department and require a request from the student’s lawful custodian. Implementation of the program follows the same guidelines as for in-district students.
  3. Free dental inspections will be offered to students, planned for by school nurses, and conducted by appropriate dental care providers.
  4. Selected screening
    1. Other screening procedures may be deemed appropriate and beneficial to students. The health services staff will assist in the planning and implementation of other screening programs following standard procedures.
  5. Screening results, and referrals when necessary, will be communicated to parents.
  6. In accordance with K.S.A. 65-1056, the parent or guardian of any child entering school for the first time shall be informed of the availability of sickle cell screening.
    1. Upon admission of any child entering school for the first time in this state, the principal or designee shall give to the parent or guardian the Sickle Cell Services Information leaflet as printed for school distribution by the Kansas Department of Health & Environment.
