Art is an integral curriculum requirement for all students in grades K-5. The art program is standard based. In the elementary school, art is child centered to develop intellectual, creative, aesthetic growth through curriculum experiences in art production, art history, art criticism and appreciation. At the middle school level, students will have an opportunity to develop skills in art production and criticism and an understanding of their cultural heritage. An art program composed of elective courses will be offered in grades 6-12.
Administrative Implemental Procedures:

In the elementary school, the art specialist will primarily be responsible for the implementation of the 45-minute per week art program.

In middle school, art may be taken to fulfill the required fine arts component of the 4 nine-weeks rotation.

The art program at the high school level will place special emphasis on development of art studio competencies and techniques. Art history, criticism, and appreciation are integral components of studio courses.

Art exhibits and displays of student work will be encouraged in schools and community.

School and art classes are encouraged to visit art museums and galleries. See BOE Policy 7350 – School Trips and Student Transportation in Private Vehicles.

Consultative services, inservice education, demonstration teaching, staff development, evaluation, and coordination of the art program are provided by the Fine Arts Department.

Classroom teachers will not prohibit attendance by students at regularly scheduled art classes as a means of punishment for behavioral reasons, or due to an inconvenience in the classroom schedule, without consultation with the art teacher and approved by the building principal.
