P6889 Safety, Eye-Protective Devices in Laboratories

In order to provide for the safety and well-being of teachers and students in laboratories, they shall be required to wear approved eye-protective devices when participating in certain classes which have substantial potential to injure eyes (K.S.A. 72-6281).
Administrative Implemental Procedures:

Eye-protective devices will be required for students in laboratories involving experience with the following:

Hot molten metals or other molten materials.
-
Milling, sawing, turning, shaping, cutting, grinding, or stamping of any solid materials.
-
Heat treatment, tempering, or kiln firing of any metal or other materials.
-
Gas or electric arc welding, or other forms of welding processes.
-
Repair or servicing of any vehicle.
-
Caustic or explosive materials.

Eye-protective devices will meet the ANSI/ISEA Z87.1 standard for occupational and educational eye and face protection, which is administered by the International Safety Equipment Association (ISEA), and approved by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

In all laboratories where eye-protective devices are furnished to students:

Such devices will be requested by building coordinators and included on the equipment budgets. Requests for eye-protective devices shall be given the highest order of priority on the equipment budgets.

Following the use of an eye-protective device by a student, the device will be sterilized in a germicidal cabinet prior to its use by a different student.

Each laboratory having eye-protective devices must be provided with a lens cleaning station. Cleaning stations are to be requested on equipment budgets by the building departmental coordinators. This item will receive a high priority on the equipment budgets.

Procedures for repair of broken eye-protective devices have been established and bulletins giving procedures have been published.
