Battle of the Books is a voluntary reading competition designed for 3rd-5th grade elementary school students which tests their reading comprehension in a game-style format. Student teams were given a list of 64 books to read and each team needs to be familiar with events, characters, and the authors of the books to answer the questions.
“There’s a wide variety of genres on the list of books to help introduce students to different types of literature, including fantasy, science fiction, historical fiction, biography and graphic novels,” said Gail Becker, Library Media and Textbook Services Supervisor. “Reading helps build a wide base of knowledge which is helpful in all aspects of education and this encourages students to develop a love of reading while participating in a fun competition.”
Students compete at their schools to be selected for their school’s team which will be featured in the district-level live competitions.
Students have been competing in Battle of the Books since 1995.
