Migrant family advocate named Excellence In Public Service Award winner

Migrant family advocate named Excellence In Public Service Award winner

Lydia Vitolas-Leake, a Migrant Family Literacy Specialist, is the 2026 Excellence in Public Service Award winner for the Wichita Public Schools.

Watch a video of Lydia being surprised with the news.

Atziri Campos, who worked with Vitolas-Leake, nominated her for the award, highlighting her dedication to supporting migrant families as well as her community service.

“For over 20 years in Wichita Public Schools, Lydia has remained deeply committed to serving families, beginning her career as a paraeducator and continuing in her current role as a Migrant Advocate,” Campos said. “Her longevity alone reflects her devotion, but it is the way she serves that truly makes her exceptional.”

“She willingly works hours well beyond the traditional workday to accommodate parents who work long, demanding schedules,” Campos said. “This flexibility is not required, but Lydia does it without hesitation because she understands that meaningful support requires meeting families where they are.”

When it comes to community service, Campos shared that Vitolas-Leake has made significant and sustained investments of time and energy in community activities and organizations well beyond her professional responsibilities.

Beyond her professional responsibilities, she serves on the board of the North End Wichita Historical Society, where she contributes her leadership and dedication to preserving local history, culture, and community identity. In addition, she serves as the chair of the Wichita State University Hispanic Alumni group, where she volunteers her time to support alumni engagement, mentorship, and educational advocacy.

Vitolas-Leake will be honored, along with the Excellence in Public Service Award winners from Sedgwick County and the City of Wichita, at a reception at Botanica on May 6.

Now in its 38th year, the award recognizes employees from the City of Wichita, Sedgwick County and Wichita Public Schools who exhibit the highest standard of service on the job and through their volunteerism. The winners each receive $3,500 from the DeVore Foundation.
