WPS recommends two-question bond proposal based on community feedback

WPS recommends two-question bond proposal based on community feedback

Wichita Public Schools administration recommended a bond issue proposal to the Board of Education on Monday, May 4, 2026. The bond proposal focuses on long-term investments and improvements including rebuilding, remodeling and renovating facilities. This proposal is a combination of facility improvements needed to support teaching and learning and projects that have a high level of community support.

The bond proposal is divided into two questions and Question 1 must pass for Question 2 to pass.

  • If Question 1 passes, property taxes would remain the same. A homeowner would not see an increase to what they currently pay.
  • If Question 2 passes, property taxes would increase by $50 a year ($4.16 a month) on a $200,000 home compared to what is currently paid.

More information about the projects can be found at wpsbond.org.

Community and staff feedback guided the decision for a two-question proposal. Our survey data shows 77% of respondents support a bond if it means no change from what they're currently paying in property tax, and 59% of respondents support a bond if it means an annual investment of $50 or less.

It is anticipated that the BOE will make a formal recommendation for a bond referendum at the June 1 meeting.
