Impact Opportunities

Inspired to Thrive

You're invited to learn about the phenomenal teachers in Wichita Public Schools who have an impact on our diverse student body every day. You'll learn more about why these diverse teachers were inspired to become educators and how you can become part of the village that helps students thrive.

Isaiah Gates

Teachers are needed to build strong leaders for the next generation, says high school teacher Isaiah Gates. After initially pursuing a major in finance, he realized that being a teacher was a vehicle for his calling to show students who look like him that they can be successful.

Karla Baltazar

Math teacher Karla Baltazar was involved in the classroom starting in middle school as a peer coach, through tutoring students after high school. Karla matches the background of many of her students of Hispanic descent, helping to develop positive relationships with students who can see their future selves thrive.

Panya Amphone

Middle school music teacher Panya Amphone was inspired to go into education because he had teachers who believed in him. Now he is the teacher he needed to see when he was in middle school – a male teacher of color who can be there for his students.

Chris Brown

Special Education teacher Chris Brown became an educator after volunteering in the classroom while playing football for the Wichita Force. He believes teaching special education provides an opportunity to be their advocate and their voice.

Myron Fisher

Assistant Principal Myron Fisher had teachers pour into him as a student, and being a teacher – and now a high school administrator – gives him the opportunity to give back.

Jocelyne Centeno

Jocelyne Centeno teaches in a diverse district because it’s important for students to see teachers who look like them, speak their language, and have similar backgrounds and experiences.

Our Students, Your Impact

"In our district, we recognize the pivotal role of a diverse teaching staff in bridging achievement disparities and enhancing student outcomes. Extensive research emphasizes the positive impact of racial representation in classrooms, particularly for Black students, where having teachers of the same race correlates with improvements in academic performance, graduation rates, attendance, and behavior.

"By actively recruiting educators from diverse backgrounds, we aim not only to empower our students but also to foster a more inclusive and supportive environment for our existing teachers of color. Our dedication to diversity and inclusion extends beyond the classroom; it's an investment in preparing our students to thrive in a multicultural world.

"Together, we strive to build a vibrant learning community where every individual is equipped to pursue a promising future."
