• How we've grown...

Cleaveland first opened in September of 1956 as an all-portable building. Sixty-two students enrolled at Cleaveland with a staff of four teachers under the principal, William H. Morgan. By 1960, enrollment had grown to over 300 students. Clearly, the student population demanded a more stable structure. The architects Schaefer, Shirmer, and Eflin were employed to to design a more permanent building. The new school was ready for occupancy in September of 1962. Later in 1976, additional classrooms, a multipurpose room, reading laboratory, kitchen, equipment storage room, and two rest rooms were added as designed by Oblinger-Smith Corporation. A chiller air conditioning unit was installed in 1994.  Cleaveland received a new addition via the bond issue in 2010.  This new addition hosts a FEMA shelter with an art room and conference room.

    Where we got our name...

Cleaveland Elementary was dedicated on October 28th, 1962. The school was named in honor of Cynthia W. Cleaveland. Miss Cleaveland came to Wichita in 1886 and was a teacher in the Wichita system for more than forty years. In 1941, she was president of the Wichita City Teachers Association, which she helped organize. Miss Cleaveland also had a part in organizing the Wichita Music Club.

    What we became...

The Board of Education approved the closing of Cleaveland School at the end of the 1995-1996 school year. Cleaveland reopened as a west side elementary traditional magnet program in the fall of 1996 with Tamara O. Breeden as principal. Ms. Breeden retired in the Spring of 2002. Michelle Wilkes is the current principal at Cleaveland.

    Where we are going...

This year we are expanding our Traditional Theme to better serve our 21st Century Learning Students.  While we continue to cover all traditional skills, we are extending our magnet theme to include College and Career Readiness. We will assist students in developing leadership skills in order for them to become productive citizens of the future.
