Due to frequent movement at the beginning of the process, waitlist numbers will not be shared until May 29.  If you are still on a waitlist during enrollment, you are encouraged to go ahead and enroll in your neihborhood school; this WILL NOT remove you from your place on the waitlist!  If you are selected after enrollment, your enrollment fees will simply transfer to your magnet school.

*As a precaution to keep our employees safe and do our part to prevent community spread of COVID-19, all Wichita Public Schools facilities will be closed for general public access, and all entry doors will remain locked. Employees required to be at work can enter at any employee entrance based on building guidelines. In addition, all school buildings will remain closed through May 31, with continuous learning opportunities for students beginning March 30. Quickest reply will be through email : asmith17@usd259.net.*

    Lottery/Selection FAQs:

I just received an email/text, what does it mean? The lottery has been completed for elementary and middle school. Results can be found on the SmartChoice software in which applications were taken at https://magnet.usd259.net/login

How do I “accept” my child’s placement? Log into the SmartChoice software at magnet.usd259.net; click on your child’s name (the application) and the status should read below to Accept or Decline.

My child is on the waiting list, what does this mean? Your child was not selected during the original lottery for their first and/or second/third choice. They are placed on a waiting list, with a number that will not be displayed until May 29, 2020 due to frequent movement. Once the number of open seats becomes clear, we will go down the waiting list and place students as space is available.

  • What are Magnet Schools?

Magnet schools are free public elementary and secondary schools of choice that are operated within the Wichita Public Schools.  Magnet schools are based on the premise that all students do not learn in the same ways, so if there is a unifying theme or a different organizational structure for students of similar interest, those students will learn more in all areas.

Magnet schools have a focused theme and aligned  courses in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), Fine and Performing Arts, Community Service, International Studies, Career Explorations and many others.  Magnet schools are typically more “hands on – minds on” and use an approach to learning that is inquiry or performance/project based. They use state, district, & Common Core standards in all subject areas, however, they are taught within the overall theme of the magnet school.
