Wichita Public Schools Leadership and Development Framework
Wichita Public Schools is committed to offering opportunities for staff to grow and develop their teaching and leadership skills throughout their careers. For academic staff interested in formal and informal leadership roles in our schools, we offer a few programs to help you on your journey. Current staff interested in pursuing any of these opportunities should contact the Elementary or Secondary offices for more information.
Aspiring Building Leader
The WPS Aspiring Leader Program will provide a semester-long learning opportunity that supports a pool of qualified and well-trained instructional and relational leaders that stand ready to apply for consideration for any future building leader vacancies.
Building Administrative Intern
A select number of Aspiring Building Leaders who do not obtain a building level administrator role may be chosen to serve in the role of Administrative Intern. This year-long internship will provide opportunities for on the job learning and application so that the candidate may be more prepared for the building administration role.
First Year Assistant Principal Learning Academy
The First Year APLA is structured to provide first year assistant principals with core competencies required of a building leader around leadership, culture systems and instruction. Mentoring from an established AP is a key element of this year-long professional learning.
Assistant Principal Learning Academy
The WPS APLA provides all assistant principals year-long, monthly meetings with members of the Superintendent’s cabinet. Professional learning is aligned with the Professional Standards for Educational Leadership, the WPS Five Core Leadership Competencies and the WPS Strategic Plan.
Preparing New Principals Academy
Preparing New Principals is designed to provide identified leaders with a more detailed view of the principalship. Sessions will include a core focus on instructional leadership, human capital management, culture & equity, organizational systems and financial capital management. Participants will create an entry plan of 30, 60 and 90 days to aid in a successful beginning to their tenure as principal. WPS Five Core Competencies will be used to provide feedback to participants related to their entry plan.
First Year Principal Learning Academy
The First Year PLA is structured to provide first-year principals with a deeper dive into core competencies required of a building leader around leadership, culture systems and instruction through the lens of a building principal. Mentoring from an established principal is a key element of this year-long professional learning.
