Enhance Safety and Belonging

  • We strive for our buildings to be high quality, comfortable and safe environments for our students and staff for years to come. One of the WPS Strategic Plan key outcomes is to create and enhance safety and belonging and the condition of our school buildings plays a key role. Improved building infrastructure results in a more conducive and positive teaching and learning environment.

WPS is building a Facility Master Plan to prioritize building needs and to build a plan for the future.

The Facility Master Planning goals are:

    • Improve the teaching and learning environment for all students and staff
    • Increase the overall utilization of our buildings (Goal is around 85%, up from 70%)
    • Gain operational efficiencies

Wichita Public Schools is partnering with Cooperative Strategies/Woolpert to evaluate all the data and provide long-tern strategy recommendations around the Facility Master Plan.

Community Feedback

  • In January 2024, Cooperative Strategies surveyed employees, parents, students and community members to share their thoughts on long-term school facility priorities. There were more than 3,000 responses to the survey.

From the survey, the top priorities Cooperative Strategies indentified are:

    • Optimizing and upgrading our facilities, which means making strategic investments in infrastructure to address building needs, enhance the learning experience and optimize resources.
    • Investments in safety and security items
    • Continue to focus on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), trades and construction, and fine arts
    • More than 70% of respondents agreed with the need for additional funding to support building renovations and improvements.
