Digital Citizenship at Wichita Public Schools

At Wichita Public Schools, we understand that digital citizenship is a critical component of preparing students for college, careers, and beyond. We proudly work alongside our Library Media Services team to provide age-appropriate digital citizenship lessons using resources from Common Sense Media and other trusted sources. These lessons empower students to navigate the digital world safely, responsibly, and ethically.

Our dedicated librarians lead the way, following a carefully designed scope and sequence to ensure that digital citizenship education is integrated at every grade level. We also encourage teachers to embrace "teachable digital citizenship moments" during their daily lessons, fostering a culture of continuous learning about online safety and responsibility.

Prioritizing Online Safety

Keeping our students safe online is a top priority at Wichita Public Schools. We believe in the power of collaboration between educators, families, and students to create a secure digital environment. Experts recommend that we all take an active role in promoting safe online behavior, and we encourage families to:

  • Spend time online with children to model appropriate digital behavior.
  • Keep computers in common areas where usage can be monitored.
  • Be mindful of time spent on smartphones, game consoles, and tablets.
  • Set clear rules and discuss the potential dangers of creating online accounts.
  • Bookmark safe websites for easy access.
  • Take children seriously if they report uncomfortable online experiences—if you see something, say something.
