Early childhood learning is important to academic success for the rest of a child’s life!
USD 259 Pre-Kindergarten offers students a comprehensive curriculum within an innovative and engaging environment. Purposeful play is integrated to facilitate academic learning in reading, writing, math, science, and social skills.
The program is free for students who will turn 4 on or before August 31 of the school year they will be attending and meet at least one qualifying factor. We also have limited spaces available for children who are 3 years old on or before Aug. 31 of the school year they will be attending. Please review the information below for the appropriate school year and age of your student.
Applications for the 2025-26 school year open on Monday, March 3, 2025 for both the 3- and 4-year-old programs for students who meet the birthdate and qualifying factors. Please complete the interest form below for your child's age and school year to start the process.

Apply for 2025-26 4-Year-Old Pre-K

Complete the interest form to proceed. Once the form is submitted, you may either call our offices to schedule an appointment or visit us in person at the Dunbar Support Center (923 N. Cleveland, Wichita, KS 67214). Walk-in hours are Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
During your appointment, please bring one of the following documents (no handwritten documents are accepted):
- Birth Certificate
- Birth Confirmation (letter given from hospital at birth)
- Immunization Records
- Passport
- Insurance Card (with DOB and Name of Child)
Qualifying Factors
- Developmental Need (free testing is available at enrollment)
- This includes cognitive, physical, literacy, social or self-help.
- Chronic or Episodic Homelessness
- Single-Parent Family
- Teen-Parent Family
- Department for Children and Families (DCF) Agency Referral
- Migrant Status
- Limited English Proficiency
- Lack of a High School Diploma or GED, for either parent
- Low Income (qualifies for food assistance)
- Foster Care
Pre-K Hours
Students attend school for three hours each day, in either the morning or afternoon.
Caldwell, Gordon Parks, Horace Mann and Pleasant Valley Elementary hours are 8:00-10:50 a.m. or 12:20-3:10 p.m. All others are 9:00-11:50 a.m. or 1:20-4:10 p.m. If childcare is needed for the other portion of the day, please discuss this with your Early Childhood specialist.
Limited free, all-day spots are available at Isely Elementary (9:00 a.m.-4:10 p.m.).
Pre-k spots are also available through Wichita Public Schools at The Opportunity Project (TOP) North and Northwest. These locations offer an option with half-day free and half-day out-of-pocket, with hours of 7:30 a.m.-3:00 p.m. TOP locations also offer a 5:30 pm. pick-up option at an additional cost.
Other Considerations
The family must be able to transport the child to and from school or arrange for the transportation, and they are required to complete the federal free and reduced meal program application to help the Early Childhood program receive the funding needed to make pre-k available to families for free. We also ask that parents ensure the student attends school regularly to develop positive attendance habits for future grades.

Applications for the 2024-25 school year opened in March 2024 for any students who turned 4 between August 31, 2023 and August 31, 2024. We continue to accept applications during the school year as long as space is available. Please complete the interest form below to start the process.

The district's pre-kindergarten (or pre-k) program for four year olds is free of charge when the students or families meet at least one qualifying factor. Beginning in 2023-24, a limited number of spots will be available only at Little Early Childhood Center, also free of charge, for three year olds (all three-year-old spots have been filled, and the wait list is closed as of May 22, 2023).
