Multilingual Services

Welcome to the Multilingual Education Services Center!

The staff at the Multilingual Education Services (MES) Center is ready to serve and assist Wichita Public Schools students who are learning English and their families. The MES Center includes various services and programs, such as:

  • Newcomer Admission Center
  • Migrant Education Program
  • District Translation Services
  • Helpline

The Newcomer Admission Center is the main point of contact for Wichita Public Schools, serving students and families who are new to the district and speak a language other than English at home. At this center, students’ English language skills are assessed to place them in the most appropriate program based on their proficiency, and parents receive assistance in completing necessary enrollment documents. MES staff members are also prepared to answer questions about Wichita Public Schools and provide information about community resources.

The Wichita Public Schools Migrant Education Program (MEP) is a federal program that helps migrant children access the same educational opportunities as all other children. This program provides services beyond those offered by other local and federal programs to help eligible students achieve academic success. Migrant students are those who have moved school districts in the last three years so their parents could obtain work related to agriculture or food processing. Migrant students are eligible for services from age 3 to 21.

The District Translation Services include oral interpretation for school meetings involving parents, students, and staff, written translations to improve communication with parents, and phone interpretations through the Helpline. All translation services are available in Spanish and Vietnamese. When necessary, oral interpretation services are also provided in other languages through school district staff and community resources.

The Helpline phone numbers are 316-866-8000 (Spanish) and 316-866-8003 (Vietnamese). Our staff is available to assist families and school staff Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
