Emergency Safety Interventions
What Is An ESI?
An Emergency Safety Intervention (ESI) is the use of seclusion or physical restraint of any student only when the student presents a reasonable and immediate danger of physical harm to self or others with the present ability to effect such physical harm or engages in violent action that is destructive of property.
When Can an ESI Be Used?
-
Beginning in the 24-25 school year, seclusion is prohibited in all schools except Bryant, Levy, Wells, and Sowers.
-
It will be prohibited at Bryant, Levy, Wells, and Sowers on January 1st, 2025.
-
Restraint is allowed only when a student’s behavior reasonably poses an immediate danger of substantial physical harm to the student or others and the student has the present ability to cause such physical harm. Physical Restraint should only be used as a last resort after appropriate De-escalation Techniques have been implemented without success and less restrictive interventions would be ineffective at stopping the immediate danger of substantial physical harm.
