Frequently Asked Questions

What is the summer meal program?  The summer meal program is a USDA funded program and is designed to provide kids and teens ages 1-18 with healthy meals during the summer months when school is out of session.

Where do I go to get free meals?

  • Dine-in sites: Yard signs will be used, at each site, to direct children and parents to the correct door.  Doors will be marked with bright yellow signs. A master map of all dine-in summer meal locations for Wichita Public Schools can be found here.
  • To-go site: Yard signs will be used to direct traffic to the pickup location.  Please enter Southeast High School Parking lot from Pawnee.

What are the requirements for my child or teen to receive a meal?

  • Dine-in sites: There is no application or registration required to receive a meal. You do not need to provide proof of income, residency or citizenship.  Just come to the site during meal times and enjoy a meal!
  • To-go site: Parents/Guardians must complete a weekly registration for each child. Pre-registration is required; unfortunately, we cannot distribute meals without it. This is a Weekly registration is required by parents for each child.  Unfortunately we will not be able to give out meals without pre-registration.  This is a USDA requirement to ensure the integrity of the program.
  • IMPORTANT: Children may receive meals either at a dine-in site or to-go site, but not both

Is there a cost? No.  All summer meals offered through the USDA's program are free to all children, ages 1-18. All sites qualify under USDA area eligibility based on census or school data.

Do meals have to be eaten onsite?

  • Dine-in sites: Yes. Due to federal regulations, all dine-in meals must be consumed on-site.  Children can take one fruit or grain from their meal off-site to eat later.
  • To-go site: meals can be taken offsite to consume later.

Do children need to be present?

  • Dine-in sites: Yes, due to regulations at the federal level, dine-in meals must be consumed onsite and children must be present to receive a meal.
  • To-go site: No, children do not need to be present at Southeast High School. Parents or legal guardians may pick up meals on behalf of their children ages 1–18. However, other caretakers, neighbors, or family friends are not allowed to pick up meals for children. This is a USDA requirement.

Parents and guardians must pre-register each week for each child in their household in order to pick up meals.

Why do I have to register each week for to-go meals? To ensure children only receive either a weekly to-go bag OR participate at a dine-in location, parents must sign up weekly. This is a USDA requirement under 7 CFR 225.6(c)(2)(xi) and 7 CFR 225.6(c)(3)(viii). Also, we are only able to produce 3,000 weekly bags each week.  Registration will open each week and spaces may fill up quick.  When parents and guardians come for pick up, their name will be checked against the sign-up roster.  If the name is not on the roster, they are unable to get meals.  Make sure to sign up weekly.

Why do you have to-go meals this summer and why is there only one site? This summer you probably have noticed that one of our sites, Southeast High School, offers to-go meals (also called noncongregate meals), while all other sites require children to eat onsite. This is based on USDA program rules, not a decision made locally. Here is why:

  • The USDA allows noncongregate (to-go/grab & go) meals only at sites located in areas officially designated as "rural"
  • Rural areas are determined using federal data and guidelines - not by our own district or community
  • In our district, Southeast High School is located in a USDA-designated rural area, which qualifies it for the noncongregate (to-go/grab & go) option.
  • Our other sites are located in areas classified as urban or suburban by the USDA. Even if they seem "spread out" locally, they do not meet the federal rural definition. These sites must follow traditional rules where children eat their meals at the site.
  • Earhart is also located in a rural area and would otherwise qualify for noncongregate service. However, because children attend structured summer programs at this site and are already receiving meals as a part of their daily activities, USDA rules require this site to offer dine-in meals only.

Why are to-go meals only served from 7am-10am? Kansas summers can bring very high temperatures, especially later in the day. Because all to-go meals must be distributed outdoors, we serve them during the cooler morning hours to protect both the safety of our staff and the quality/safety of the food. Limiting meal service to the morning helps ensure meals are served safely and comfortably for everyone.

If I am unable to pick up my children's to-go meals during 7a-10a, can I pick them up somewhere else? No. At this time, to-go meals are only available during the scheduled 7am - 10am on Wednesday distribution at Southeast High School.  Unfortunately, meals cannot be picked up from different location or outside of the set serving hours.  These rules help us meet USDA program requirements and ensure the meals are distributed safely and fairly to all families. We understand that this may be challenging and appreciate your understanding.

Can I send someone else to pick up my children's to-go meals? No. Only a parent, legal guardian, or the child themselves is allowed to pick up to-go meals. This rule is part of the USDA program guidelines to ensure meals are given safely and appropriately.

Can Daycare Providers pick up to-go meals for their daycare? No. Under USDA rules, only parents or legal guardians are allowed to pick up to-go meals. Daycare providers caring for groups of children who are not their own are not considered guardians and are not eligible to pick up meals on behalf of the children.

Can adults eat free summer meals?  Meals are intended for kids and teens.  However, adults are welcome to purchase a meal at a dine-in site.  Breakfast is $3.25 and lunch is $5.50.  Please bring exact change as site staff do not carry change. Adults cannot purchase a to-go weekly bag

What kind of meal is served?  The meals served are healthy and follow USDA nutrition guidelines.  Dine-in menus are available at https://www.schoolcafe.com/WICHITAPUBLICSCHOOLS. Weekly to-go bags will vary by week based on food availability.

Who funds free summer meals? Free summer meals are funded by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). Local sponsors, like our school district, operate the program by preparing and serving the meals, and we are reimbursed by the USDA for each eligible meal we provide. This partnership ensures that all children have access to healthy meals at no cost during the summer months.
