JROTC Leadership Program

About Us

Founded in 1994, the Wichita Public Schools Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) Leadership Program is an exciting opportunity for students residing in the state’s largest city and in the state’s largest school district, USD 259. Our JROTC Leadership alumni-- among many outstanding men and women include our city’s mayor, our board of education president, an aerospace software engineer, and a United States Air Force fighter pilot.

Our Leadership program is tailored to the learning capabilities of 6th through 8th grade middle school students. Cadets in these grade levels historically continue into the JROTC program in high school. The year-long middle school curriculum aligns standards in character, health & fitness, service learning and leadership. The Leadership program teaches American history, citizenship, and government with an emphasis on the purpose, structure, accomplishments and traditions. The course encourages cadets to work as a team, effectively communicate, the importance of physical fitness, and wearing the Leadership Uniform.

Our JROTC program prepares high school age grade level cadets for the future. In addition to promoting citizenship, JROTC exposes students to postsecondary options including college, military service or entry into the workforce. Cadets meet one-on-one with elected officials and community leaders who offer outstanding opportunities for mentorship and internships. Cadets learn speechwriting and oratory skills. Through team competitions, students learn leadership skills, teamwork, time-management, self-discipline and communication. All are essential skills for whatever profession or career path their interests and passions may take them.

Our top-ranked instructors all have a strong military service background. They pride themselves in being life-long mentors.

"Motivating young people to be better citizens."

Success

Participation in JROTC can be directly linked to success factors both while in the classroom, and after graduation. Because of the self-discipline, leadership, time management and teamwork skills students learn in JROTC, studies have shown outcomes for student success both in and upon graduation from high school.

While JROTC cadets do not receive any financial compensation while in the high school program, they can receive a sizable financial benefit if they enlist, as they are entitled to advanced promotion as a result of their JROTC experience.
