  • The Science Magnet program is for students interested in careers in the sciences, medicine, engineering, or other related degree programs at four-year colleges and universities. Math and science courses are integrated and taught with an application focus. Lab and research skills are stressed. Students have an opportunity to earn over eleven credits in math and science as well as complete credit at Wichita State University and other local colleges and universities.logo
     

    To earn an NEM Science Magnet Certificate students complete:

    • At least 8 Science credits including Biology, Chemistry & Physics
    • Four Credits in math (must have a minimum of Pre-Calculus)
    • Algebra 2 and pre-Calculus must be completed with a C better.
    • Earn a 'C' or better in all science classes.
    • Four annual science projects completed at a 'C' or better.
    • 25 total credits with a GPA of 2.5 or better.

    Technology

    NEM is connected to the world. Students have internet availability in each classroom, a computer lab, and the library. The school has its own local area network. NEM utilizes PC hardware. Technology in the form of robotic arms, wind tunnels, and testing equipment is utilized. All students are expected to use this technology for research, word processing, presentations and communication.

    NEM’s science department has strong educational partnerships with Project Lead the Way, Wichita State University, the University of Kansas School of Medicine, Friends University, and Newman University. The department also receives support from Boeing, Raytheon, Access Inc., and other local and national businesses. Partners assist with competitions, instruction, projects and mentorships.

    Competitions
    NEM science students have successfully competed in academic demonstration and problem solving activities such as the Kansas Junior Academy of Science, Science Olympiad, Electric Car Competition, BEST Robotics contest, and technical writing contests.
