Senior Spotlight — Roxzana Martinez

East High School graduating senior Roxzana MartinezEast High senior Roxzana Martinez credits the AVID program with helping her get involved in activities in high school. Martinez has been in the AVID program since elementary school.

“My freshman year, I didn’t really get involved in school, but AVID really encouraged me to get involved,” said Martinez. “I joined Rise Up For Youth’s Sisterhood program and they got me involved in the community.”

Martinez also joined the East High girls’ soccer team.

She admits the past year of online learning has been hard, but is happy to be back to in-person learning.

“It was really hard. Mentally it brought me down,” said Martinez. “Now that we’re back in school it feels better because we get to socialize with people now.”

An only child whose parents emigrated from Mexico, Martinez moved to Wichita in fifth grade. Her parents have instilled the importance of education.

She has been taking classes through WSU Tech to become a certified nursing assistant.

“I want to major in biochemistry and become a physician assistant,” said Martinez. “I took CNA classes to get my feet wet to know what it’s like to be out there.”
