East High Welcomes New Athletic Director

Jay Crayton has been selected as Athletic and Activities Director at Wichita High School East for the 2021-2022 school year.


Coach Crayton is a Proud Graduate of the Wichita Public Schools and comes to Wichita High School East from Gordon Parks Middle School, where he is a current teacher, coach, and athletic director. He has worked for WPS for 12 years and has coached at both the high school and middle school level with both men’s and women’s programs. He brings coaching experience from basketball, track, and cross country. Coach Crayton brings personal experience as a former athlete. After a life-threatening illness left him paralyzed his freshman year of high school, he was able to recover and earn All-City Honors his Senior Year and was able to attend college on a basketball scholarship.


As a teacher, he was selected as a 2021 Distinguished Classroom Teacher Semi Finalist. His passion for mentoring and developing student athletes not only in his classroom, but through a variety of community involvement and volunteer experiences, earned him a Nomination for the Wichita Community Service Award for 2021. He coaches summer basketball camps for all ages and is very active in the Wichita Community and through his church. He currently is the Youth Pastor at Greater Pentecostal COGIC.


Coach Crayton has a master’s degree in Sports Administration and interned in the Wichita State Athletic Department, under the Shocker Athletic Scholarship Organization/Development Department. Coach Crayton describes himself as a “Die Hard Shocker Fan.” Upon completion of his master’s degree, he received a letter from President Obama, congratulating him as an Upcoming Leader for showing determination and resilience after many setbacks.


Wichita High School East is excited to add Coach Crayton to the Blue Ace Family. He brings a strong passion for student success in both athletics/activities and academics to the rich traditions of Wichita’s Original High School, the Home of Champions.
