Gil Alvarez named Deputy Superintendent for the Wichita Public Schools

Gil Alvarez Gil Alvarez, Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools, has been selected as Deputy Superintendent of the Wichita Public Schools effective April 1, 2021.  As Deputy Superintendent, Alvarez will oversee elementary and secondary schools, learning services, special education and student support and other aspects of instruction.

Mr. Alvarez has worked in WPS for more than 20 years. He began his career as a science teacher at South and Northwest High Schools. He served as athletic director and assistant principal at North High School, and principal at Coleman Middle School and Northeast Magnet and Northwest High Schools before joining the WPS administrative team as Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools in 2017. He also created instructional and professional development materials for the AVID organization that have been used in multiple school districts across the country.

Below is a message Superintendent Dr. Alicia Thompson sent to staff informing them of the appointment.

Good afternoon district colleagues,

After a rigorous search and interview process with exceptional candidates, I am pleased to inform you that our next deputy superintendent will be Mr. Gil Alvarez, current Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools. He will officially take over this critical district academic leadership role on April 1. As he prepares to lead our academic work, he will also begin the search process for our next Assistant Superintendent of Secondary Schools.

Mr. Alvarez is as a leader nationally through his work with the AVID organization. He is active at the local and state levels in work related to education and youth advocacy. And without question, his knowledge of our district organization – as a classroom teacher, building administrator, central office leader, and current parent - makes him uniquely suited to lead us during this critical period as we focus on the final two years of our Every Student Future Ready strategic plan.

I know you will join me in wishing Mr. Alvarez well as he assumes this vital academic leadership role. I look forward to continued collaboration with him in this new role, and with all of you, as we continue to pursue our mission of service to Wichita’s children!
