Senior Spotlight - Grecia Esparza, East High School
Grecia Esparza is a senior at East High School. Four years ago, she didn't think she could go to college, but through her hard work and dedication, she earned a full scholarship to attend Wichita State University where she plans to become a high school math teacher.
Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, Grecia came to Wichita at age 9. Her experience of adjusting to this new life led her to learn that even if life is not easy, you must always find a way to navigate it differently.
“I know that many doors are going to be closed, but I am going to continue looking for paths that will take me to my goals,” Grecia said.
When she started high school, Grecia thought it would be much easier, however, she found herself with a much bigger challenge than she was prepared for.
“I ran into things I didn't know how to do, from walking in this big building to finding my classes. But with time I learned, and I began to know my teachers and classmates.”
Some of her favorite memories of East High School are her French and AVID classes, especially the debates and conversations with her classmates. She was also a member of the National Honor Society, Students Against Prejudice, the French club, and the Latino club.
Her advice to other high school students is not to give up. The more effort you put into something, the more satisfaction you get at the end.
“At first I wasn't sure if I could go to university, but everyone here helped me stay focused because I know my studies will give me the future I want for myself.”
