Out of district enrollment process and open seat numbers shared at BOE meeting

Wichita Board of Education members learned more about the process for enrolling students who live outside the district boundaries and how many open seats are available during their April 8, 24 meeting. Policy 5506, Non-Resident Enrollment and Admission, was amended in November 2023 to comply with a new Kansas law (K.S.A. 72-3123) that allows out of district students to enroll in district schools.  While WPS currently allows students who live outside WPS boundaries to enroll, the new law establishes guidelines and processes that all Kansas school districts will follow. This school year, 1,185 students from outside the district are enrolled in WPS schools.

Out of district students can apply to a WPS school that has capacity. Schools that have been identified as welcoming schools for fall 2024 and magnet schools are not included in the capacity numbers. WPS has identified 275 seats open at elementary schools, 120 seats open at middle schools and 60 seats available at high schools. Click here to see the capacity numbers for each school.

Non-resident students interested in magnet schools will follow the magnet application process. More information about magnet schools can be found at

In-district students who want to attend another school in the district can go through the special transfer process or the magnet school application process.

Applications for out-of-district enrollment will be open from June 1-30, 2024, and accepted students will be notified by July 15, 2024. Current out-of-district students already enrolled do not need to reapply. Enrollment information will be available at
