Scanning devices starting to be delivered to WPS

As part of our continued work to ensure that our schools are trusted as safe places, the Wichita Board of Education approved purchasing OPENGATE screening devices for all WPS high schools during its September 12, 2022 meeting. The devices are starting to be delivered to WPS. West High School volunteered to be the first school to use the screening devices beginning Friday, December 2.

A demonstration of the OPENGATE screening devices will be Thursday, December 1 at 3:20 p.m. at West High School, 820 S. Osage. Terri Moses, Director of Safety and Environmental Services, and Mark Jolliffe, West High School principal, will talk about the scanners being used in our schools. West students and their School Resource Officer will give a demonstration of the devices.

The OPENGATE scanners are designed to automatically scan backpacks and bags for metal threats, including firearms. The devices are portable and can be moved throughout the schools for different events as another layer of safety precautions.
