Superintendent Dr. Alicia Thompson will share recommendations to BOE for return to school plan

On January 8, 2021, Superintendent Dr. Alicia Thompson sent a message to parents about a recommendation for students returning to school that will be presented to the Board of Education during their January 11 meeting at 6 p.m. Any changes to the current learning plan will be based on whether the BOE votes to approve the recommendations.

The message to families is below:

Good afternoon parents,

I want to welcome you back after winter break and to thank you for your support of your students and their remote learning experience as we approach the end of the second quarter.

On Monday night, the Board of Education will meet to discuss current COVID-19 data in our community and evaluate our current learning plan. Administration is considering a recommendation that will have elementary onsite students return to class on January 13, PreK onsite students return to class on January 14, and middle and high school onsite students return to the blended onsite model on January 25 when the second semester begins.

Additional details of the recommendation will be presented on Monday during the meeting. Families will not see any changes if they selected the remote learning model for their student, are enrolled in Education Imagine Academy, or have a student who is already onsite being served through a temporary services plan.

We want you to be aware of Monday’s discussion. If the Board of Education votes to approve having students return to onsite learning, the district will send information to families after the meeting Monday night. Elementary families will need to be prepared to shift learning models within the week. You can watch the meeting live on Cox Cable channel 20, WPS-TV online (, or get live feeds through Twitter (@wichitausd259).

We are eager to see students return to school as quickly as is safely possible. Please continue to wear your mask, wash your hands, and practice social distancing.

Thank you for your continued support of the Wichita Public Schools.
