Work is a family affair for DeFore, Williams, families at Bostic

DeFore family at Bostic Traditional Magnet Elementary Bostic Traditional Magnet Elementary School is one of the district’s smaller elementary schools, with a tight-knit staff and engaged school community.

It also happens to have four members of the same family as members of the staff.

It started with Mikelle DeFore, a third-grade teacher who has been at Bostic for 19 years, and even student-taught at the school. Six years ago, her husband, Tim, underwent a kidney transplant and needed a part-time job due to health issues. When a paraprofessional position opened up at Bostic, Mikelle encouraged him to apply.

Two of their three children attend the school; the third moved on to middle school this year.

Four years ago, Mikelle’s mother, Vicki Williams, retired from the Federal Courthouse and was looking for another part-time, office-based position when the clerk position at Bostic opened up. This year she replaced the fulltime bookkeeper.

“My kids were here, my grandkids were here and I had gotten to see what Bostic was like from attending activities at the school, so I was excited to work here,” said Vicki.

Tim’s mother, Joyce, retired from providing home-based daycare after 43 years and was looking for something part-time when the five-hour-a-week playground and lunchroom aide position became available two months ago.

“I was looking for something that involved kids but still gave me enough time to spend time with my grandkids,” said Joyce.

You might think that having four members of the same family working together would stand out among the other staff members and school community, but that’s not necessarily the case.

“We have our own spheres of work and interact very professionally, so people might not automatically know we’re related,” said Tim.

Jared Grover, who is in his first year as principal at Bostic, says that it even took him a little while to figure out.

“You see individuals come together and you almost don’t know they’re family because they’re so professional,” said Grover. “It’s been great to see them working together while having their own role to fulfill the needs of our students and our school.”
