Weather Note
It’s that time of year again, the winter season. Winter cold, dry air and brisk winds can be tough on the tender skin of children. The cold, dry winter air and wind can rob the skin of moisture leaving it red, chapped and itchy. Exposed skin can also lead to loss of body heat. Parents should have children cover as much skin with coats, mittens and scarves when going outside to protect skin from the drying effects of the cold and dry air.
Guidelines for clothing and weather:
- 60 degrees and warmer: Short sleeves are okay. Add a jacket if feeling chilly.
- 50-60 degrees: Child should wear long sleeves. Jacket outside.
- 40-50 degrees: Child should have a coat. May need to layer clothing when inside such as an undershirt with a sweatshirt on top.
- 30-40 degrees: Child must wear a winter jacket, hat and mittens. Socks are important.
- Below 30 and if snowy: Full set of snow gear. Multiple layers of clothing. Warm shoes and socks.
