Dr. Alicia Thompson named future Wichita Public Schools’ Superintendent

Dr. Alicia Thompson named future Wichita Public Schools’ Superintendent

Dr. Thompson Dr. Alicia Thompson will lead the Wichita Public Schools as its future superintendent effective July 1, 2017. The Board of Education announced their unanimous decision on February 21, pending final negotiations of the contract. The BOE selected Dr. Thompson after receiving feedback from teachers and other district employees, students, parents, business leaders and community members on what they considered to be essential leadership characteristics, personal qualities and experience for the next superintendent.

“The Board is glad to hire Dr. Thompson as our next superintendent,” said Board of Education President Sheril Logan. “Her work and her reputation are stellar and she is just the person we need to lead us into the future.”  

“I want to thank the Board for the opportunity to serve as the future Superintendent. I am honored to continue the work that Superintendent John Allison has set for us and to move the district forward,” Dr. Thompson said.

“I want to promise the students of the Wichita Public Schools that I will continue to work hard for you and I believe in you and your future.”

Dr. Thompson is currently Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools for the Wichita Public Schools. She began her career in the district in 1992 as a 3rd grade teacher at Ingalls Elementary, and served the district as assistant principal at Cloud Elementary, principal at Little, Cessna and Spaght Elementary Schools and Executive Director of Staff Development prior to becoming Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Schools in 2005.

Dr. Thompson received her education in the Wichita Public Schools. She attended Carter Elementary, Chisholm Trail Elementary, Brooks Middle School and graduated in 1986 from Heights High School. Her husband, Reggie, is a graduate of West High School, her daughter Aniya attends Price-Harris Communications Magnet and daughter Mya graduated from Northeast Magnet High School in 2016.

“The Wichita community has made investments in me, and I want to honor those investments by giving back to the community by serving as the future Superintendent of the Wichita Public Schools,” she said. “Our community is so giving and so caring. My husband and I stayed in Wichita because we wanted our daughters to have those experiences as well.”

Dr. Thompson thanked Superintendent Allison for his work in the Wichita Public Schools and for being a mentor to her.

Superintendent Allison accepted the superintendent’s position with the Olathe Public Schools beginning next school year.
