Senior Spotlight - Daegiona Wilson, South High School

Daegiona Wilson South High School senior Daegiona Wilson is a great example of a student who has made the most of her high school experience.

She is known for her athletic skills in track, cross country and basketball, but she is also a student who helped make her school a better place as student body president, and serving on the Principal's and Superintendent’s Advisory Councils. She was also one of two students selected to advise the district on the school calendar and this year was named a 2019 Young Achiever by the Wichita Business Journal. This was in addition to working as a lifeguard, being an AVID student, participating in JROTC, and being a member of the school’s drumline.

Despite having some family challenges, Wilson worked hard in high school balancing several extracurricular activities and volunteer positions at local nonprofits while taking challenging courses.

Her hard work has paid off. She was named a 2019 Horatio Alger State Scholar and received a $10,000 scholarship, received the Hixson Scholarship from the University of Kansas, and was a top 11 finalist in Wichita State University’s Distinguished Scholarship Invitational.

She has decided to pursue a career in journalism and plans to attend Southwestern College on the full-ride Moundbuilder Scholarship.

Her ultimate goal is to become a sports commentator on ESPN.

Her advice for other students is to focus on what you want to accomplish.

“If you represent yourself well and you have drive and determination, you can do it,” Wilson said.
