East High student leaders selected for ambassador program
East High School’s college and career coordinator Cammie Kennedy has created a student ambassador program where juniors and seniors are selected to represent the school to prospective students and families as well as serve as student leaders within the school.
To be considered for the program, students must have a 3.5 GPA and be in good academic standing. Students are nominated by a counselor and then interviewed by current student ambassadors, Kennedy, lead counselor Kim Gonzalez, and Claudia Cooper, an East High assistant principal who oversees the program.
Once selected, student ambassadors:
- Create and host the annual Blue Aces Red Carpet Gala event for seniors
- Lead school-wide live presentations during advocacy on topics such as email etiquette, how to use Xello college and career readiness software and more.
- Broadcast the school’s daily announcements
- Organize and lead school-wide events
- Conduct new student and faculty tours
- Help promote the school’s college and career center
- Help peers with college federal financial aid applications
Kennedy patterned the program after the ones she led as an admissions director at Newman University and the University of Colorado. In college programs, students typically have to be a sophomore or higher to participate.
“Wichita State was so impressed with our program and the level of training our ambassadors receive, that they hired an incoming freshman from our program to join their ambassador program,” said Kennedy.
East High principal Sara Richardson is impressed with the success of the program.
“The East High Ambassador Program through our College and Career Center is a phenomenal asset to our school,” Richardson said. “These students are the face of our school for new and prospective students, assist their peers through the post-secondary exploration process as well as assist in the transition to their post-secondary choice.”
