BOE votes to transition to remote learning for all grade levels effective Dec. 2
McCollom parents and guardians,
Recently you received a letter that let you know our district was planning for potential school closure if COVID-19 impacted our ability to educate your student in the school building. At the time, we advised parents to be prepared with a childcare plan in the event we must shift to 100% remote learning.
I’m writing today to let you know that the Wichita Board of Education has determined that effective Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2020, all Wichita Public Schools will temporarily transition to a 100% remote learning environment, meaning our school building will close temporarily for onsite learning as a result of complications from the public health crisis caused by COVID-19, and latchkey will be unavailable. Our timeline is as follows:
- Tuesday, Dec. 1- Devices and learning materials coming home with students. Dec. 1 PTO Meeting will be rescheduled.
- Wednesday, Dec. 2 – Temporary shift to 100% remote learning model until further notice. All families should make arrangements for care of their child during the school day.
- Dec. 2-3 - All students will utilize instructional materials sent home with your student to engage in self-paced learning with teacher contact in the morning and mid-day. Teachers will use this time to transition their lesson plans to a remote learning format, and will allow your student to become familiar with this new learning model.
- Dec. 4 - All students will engage in a full day of remote learning with their classroom teacher.
Classroom teachers will send communication about how students will log in each day through teams or seesaw.
- Jan. 11 - The Board of Education will evaluate COVID data at its meeting on Jan. 11, 2021, to determine when we will be able to bring our onsite students back to our school.
For students with special education needs, case managers will contact families if they feel there are any services that can’t temporarily be provided remotely. Some students may still need to come to a school building for their special education services. Parents can also contact their school or case manager if they have concerns about whether a special education service can be provided remotely. IEP teams may need to meet to discuss student needs during this temporary shift to remote instruction.
This decision hasn’t been made lightly, as our district leaders understand the stress such a change can pose to you, your student, and your family. However, COVID-19 has significantly impacted our employees, in particular the significant number of our staff impacted by close-contact quarantine requirements. We will make every effort to minimize the impact this interruption in onsite learning has on your student’s educational progress. Please know that we will be working to determine the best way to support your student upon the return to onsite instruction. This decision will not affect current MySchool Remote students.
I do want to emphasize that learning will continue, and important information is provided on the attached information sheet to help you prepare. Please check your email and our school web site regularly (https://www.usd259.org/mccollom) for additional information about the return of students to our school building in the spring.
