WPS collects thousands for Turkey Drive
WPS collects thousands of items for Turkey Drive
Thank you for all who helped support the United Methodist Open Door Turkey Drive on November 22, in partnership with B98FM. The Wichita Waterwalk served as the drop off location for the schools, district offices and for downtown Wichita. This year the schools and district collected 3,273 turkeys, 43,712 side items and $9,985.96.
See photos from the Turkey Drive. Video of the Turkey Drive will be posted soon.
Many schools showed their spirit when they dropped off their turkeys and donations. West High students arrived by parade with a covered wagon, Levy Special Education Center’s mascot led their arrival parade. OK Elementary and Adams Elementary students cheered and danced as they dropped off items, Robinson arrived in VW vans dressed as hippies, South students arrived dressed as Titans, and Northwest, Wilbur, Kensler, McCollom and Peterson coordinated their deliveries together to show teamwork within their feeder pattern.
Schools have competitions between each other, which has helped the district’s participation in the Turkey Drive be successful.
The school awards are:

JROTC and Leadership Cadets from East and Pleasant Valley Middle School worked at the drop off site to help carry boxes and unload cars and trucks of their turkeys and canned goods.
Wal-Mart on west Kellogg partnered with the high schools to allow students to purchase numerous turkeys at a lower cost. Cargill provided a refrigerated truck to transport the frozen turkeys after they were delivered. The Wichita Waterwalk provided the location and the Kansas Foodbank provided storage for some of the donated items. Thank you to all the partners who helped United Methodist Open Door!
