Wildcat Wind Racer Rally

Wildcat Wind Racer Rally

McLean Science & Technology Magnet

May 2 - 3, 2018

McLean students have the opportunity to design, build, present, and race their very own wind-powered, land racing vehicle. This event is going to be WINDerful!

Here’s the scoop!  Students are to build, test, and modify an original wind powered vehicle at home.

Then on Thursday morning May 2nd students will bring their physical model and assignment sheet(s) to school. The wind racers will be placed on display throughout the building so that everyone has the opportunity to view all of the amazing wind racer models throughout the day.  Finally, we will hold a Wind Racer Rally on Friday May 3rd where each grade level will have the chance to race their vehicles.

This is a school wide event for kindergarten through fifth grade.

THE CHALLENGE:

Design and construct a wind-powered racer that is:

  • No larger than 15 cm x 20 cm (6 in. x 8 in.)
  • Able to travel straight at least 2 meters (6 ft.) moved by wind

THE PROCEDURE:

  1. Design and construct a vehicle which meets the challenge above.
  2. Test your vehicle at home using a blow dryer or a fan as the wind source.
  3. Think of ways to improve the design, then change it and retest.
  4. Complete the provided plan and data sheet during the process.

RULES AND GUIDELINES:

  • The vehicle must be the product of the student’s ideas and work.
  • Students must complete a physical model (the wind-racer), a labeled plan sheet of their racer, and the test data sheet.
  • Students in grades 3-5 will also be required to give an oral report in class.
  • Vehicles should be constructed from common household items (see suggested materials list). Vehicles designed from kits or specialty items are not acceptable.
