BOE receives budget update after school finance bill passes

The Board of Education heard a budget update during the April 8 meeting. Chief Financial Officer Susan Willis gave a presentation after the school finance bill, Senate Bill 16, was passed by the Kansas Legislature and signed by Governor Laura Kelly.

Senate Bill provides $90 million in new funding statewide. With that bill, there are several new accountability reports for each district in Kansas. WPS is waiting for the state to share more details about the accountability reports and how they will have an impact on the budget.

The Kansas Supreme Court will look at the school finance bill later this month to see if the $90 million is sufficient enough to meet the Court’s concern that inflation was not addressed as part of the increased funding for the past two years.

In the meantime, the district will begin the budget planning process by estimating fixed cost increases and setting budget priorities around the WPS Strategic Plan.
