Freed Receives KAKE's Golden Apple

West High band director receives Golden Apple Award

Joanna Freed, a band director at West High School, was surprised in her classroom with the Golden Apple Award from KAKE-TV. She was nominated for the award by a friend who said Freed provides a positive artistic outlet for her students and that she’s absolutely passionate about what she does.

“I am extremely grateful to have been nominated for KAKE’s Golden Apple Award, but his award really belongs to my students,” said Freed. “They have put in so much time and effort into improving West High School’s instrumental music program, and this award shows that people are noticing our progress. We will continue to work hard to positively represent West High School, USD 259, and the city of Wichita.”

The Golden Apple Award winners receive a Golden Apple trophy from Davis-Moore Autogroup and $1,000 in school supplies from Project Teacher.

Lane Enterprises McDonald’s Restaurants is also a program partner.

The winner is featured on KAKE-TV’s Monday 5 p.m. newscast.
