Board of Education and SEIU agree on tentative salary and benefit package for two employee groups

The Wichita Board of Education and the Service Employees International Union (Local 513) have reached tentative agreements on the 2019-20 salary and benefit package for SEIU and the Uniformed Security Officers and Security Dispatchers groups.

Highlights include:

  • 2.75% salary improvement;
  • One step on the salary schedule;
  • Employees eligible for steps in years when steps were frozen and not waived by the bargaining unit, shall advance to the correct catch-up step on the salary schedule;
  • Longevity pay for years of experience for eligible employees;
  • Movement on the career ladder if employees are eligible and qualify;
  • No changes to the employee health plan premium;
  • Paraeducator supervisor pay increase $1 hour; and
  • $.50 hour premium differential for all classified staff working at Greiffenstein, Wells, Sowers and Gateway Alternative Schools.

“Recruitment and retention of high-quality staff is one of the Board of Education’s top priorities,” said Superintendent Dr. Alicia Thompson. “I’m pleased we were able to offer this compensation increase to our service, security and dispatch employees in order to recognize the valuable contributions they make every day to the success of Wichita Public Schools students.”

“We appreciate the positive and collaborative negotiating process we have had with USD 259. We believe that a variety of our concerns have been heard and a good deal of our needs have been met while focusing on doing what is best for kids and those who serve them. Now we can get back to school and focus on the very important task of keeping schools safe, clean and provide the educational support that our children deserve,” said Esau Freeman, business representative for SEIU Local 513.

Sheril Logan, Board of Education president, said, “We have the best employees who work tirelessly and deserve to be rewarded. It is very good news that WPS and the SEIU employees have come to an agreement on the contract.”

SEIU members will vote on this tentative agreement August 5 – 9 at various in-services and locations and on August 7 at the SEIU Union Hall. Security Officers and Security Dispatchers unanimously accepted the contracted during their inservice August 1. Following member ratification, the Board of Education will give final approval to the agreement during their August 12 meeting.

SEIU Local 513 represents more than 2,000 classified employees in the district, including custodians, clerical staff, paraprofessionals, Nutrition Services employees, uniformed security officers, dispatchers and other School Service Center employees.
