The United Teachers of Wichita and the Board of Education came to a tentative one-year agreement this evening, September 3.
Highlights of the tentative agreement are noted below. The total compensation package is valued at 4.99%:
Base salary increase of 3.5% (representing a starting new teacher salary of $43,653)
1 step for all teachers who are eligible to advance
1 catch-up step for eligible employees who are 3 steps behind
Tracks honoring additional education
Longevity bonus payments for qualifying veteran teachers
No change to the employee health program or premiums, which represents a BOE contribution of $8,280 a year ($690 month) per employee
Other tentatively agreed to items include:
Student Support Services workgroup
Elementary teacher temporary substitute pay increased to $25/hour not to exceed $50/day
2 additional peer consultants beginning in the 20-21 school year
Peer consultant language change regarding teacher eligibility for consideration as a peer consultant
Teachers will communicate with the bargaining unit on the ratification schedule later this month. If ratified by teachers prior to the October 7 BOE meeting, the Wichita BOE will vote on the agreement at that meeting. If approved by the BOE, bargaining unit members will see the agreement and retroactive pay in their October paychecks.
All WPS employees will receive an email from Human Resources reflecting their new compensation based on the agreements reached with each employee group.
