Return to Face to Face Learning for Students

Woodman parents and guardians,

Last night you received communication from Superintendent Thompson that our elementary students who have selected onsite learning for the first semester will return to our school building on Wednesday, Jan. 13, and PreK students will return on Thursday, Jan. 14. I recognize that many parents have questions about this transition, and I want to provide answers to the most common questions, as well as provide additional details about our school’s plans.

  • If I chose a different learning model for second semester, what should I do this Wednesday?
    • We are still in the first semester and will be through Jan. 21. Therefore, your child will return to school Wednesday if you chose onsite learning for first semester. If you chose MySchool Remote for the first semester, your child will continue remote learning.
  • What do I do with my child’s laptop if he is returning to onsite learning?
    • Our district has made the commitment to every student that they will have a modern computing device to support their learning. Your student will keep that laptop through the school year to support in-class learning, remote learning, homework and research.
  • I have selected MySchool Remote as my child’s learning model – will this impact my child?
    • If you selected MySchool Remote for your child for the first semester, they will continue to learn remotely. If this is your selection for second semester, remote learning will continue Jan. 25 through the remainder of the school year.
  • Will my child still receive free meals?
    • If your child continues as a MySchool Remote learner, you can continue to order meals online and pick them up on Wednesdays (www.usd259.org/remotefood). If you ordered meals for pick up on Wednesday 1/13, and your child will be returning to school, you may still pick up those meals. Any future orders will be cancelled since your student will be returning to school onsite.
  •  Will latchkey continue?
    • Latchkey will resume as scheduled on Wednesday for those onsite parents who have previously been enrolled in our school’s latchkey program.
  • What do I do with the school-issued computer?
    • All school-issued devices should be returned on Wednesday, along with the charging cord and bag.  We will continue to use these devices as part of in-class learning.  Mifi devices may be kept at home for now in case of inclement weather days.

It is important to note that we will monitor student and staff illness data. In the event that this data warrants a temporary return to 100% remote learning due to staffing and safety considerations, we will likely make a quick pivot back to the remote learning format. Please be sure that your family has a child care plan in the event that we notify you of this safety-related transition.

If your child is returning to our school building, please know that we are excited to see them, and prepared to do everything possible to help all students and staff be as safe as possible. There are several things I want to remind you of concerning our building procedures:

  • All students and staff will be required to wear face masks.
  • You should check your student for a temperature each morning, and if they are sick keep them at home. If you or anyone in your family believes you may have symptoms of COVID, you can contact our WPS COVID testing center for a free rapid test. Our district also offers testing for those with no symptoms. The attachments will provide you with additional information.
  • Make sure your child comes to school each day with their water bottle.
  • Parents must wear a mask when dropping off/picking up children.  Non-staff members will not be permitted into the building.

Help us keep our kids in school! Our ability to keep our students onsite is directly impacted by the health of our community and the impact of COVID-19 on our staff and students. Please wear a mask at all times, wash your hands, practice social distancing, and encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same.

Kind regards,

Janice Wilson, Principal
