New program to provide hygiene products to students in need

Giving the Basics Giving the Basics-Wichita is being piloted in 18 schools through a partnership with the new non-profit organization and the Wichita Police Department.

Giving the Basics-Wichita is a nonprofit dedicated to providing hygiene items to students and families in need. The Wichita Police Department is assisting with distribution of items in the Broadway Corridor as part of their community policing efforts.

The program, which is being piloted in 11 District 1 schools, two special programs and five schools in the Broadway corridor, aims to bring dignity, health and opportunity to thrive to struggling children and adults through the distribution of personal hygiene products. These include items like hair care, deodorant, toilet paper and laundry detergent, among others. The Dunbar Support Center and McKinney-Vento Homeless Education program will also benefit from the program. Additional schools will be added after evaluating the initial process.

At each participating school, the hygiene products will be stored in a central, secure location; typically with the school nurse. Students will be able to request items as the need arises.

WPS will be hosting a Dignity Drive to collect related hygiene items through Sept. 20 at the Alvin E. Morris Administrative Center, 903 S. Edgemoor. Visitors can drop items off in the blue collection barrel just inside the visitor entrance. Employees will find collection barrels at the main employee entrance and staff cafeteria as well.
