Heat-Practice Guidelines

 

  • Zones will be communicated each day between 1:00-2:00 via e-mail and/or web posting. 
  • Zones are based on Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT). 
  • Zones will be evaluated anytime the ambient air temperature is 80 degrees or higher. 
  • All participants should have unrestricted access to water during activity participation. 
  • At-risk athletes should be monitored more closely when in any elevated zone.

ACTIVITY MODIFICATION

≤ 79.9° F

  • Zone 1 – Low risk
  • Normal activities – Practice not to exceed 2.5 hours (per practice); if 2 practices in the same day, minimum of one hour rest/recovery between practices; maximum 4 hours (cumulative) practices per day
  • Provide at least 3 separate rest breaks each hour with a minimum duration of 3 minutes each.

80° - 84.6° F

  • Zone 2 – Caution
  • Practice not to exceed 2.25 hours if only one practice; practice not to exceed 1.75 hours (per practice) if 2 practices in the same day, minimum 1 hour rest/recovery between practices
  • MINIMUM 3 separate rest breaks each hour with a minimum duration of 4 minutes each.
  • Cold water immersion tub or other rapid cooling method should be prepared and ready.

84.7° - 87.7° F

  • Zone 3 – Extreme Caution
  • MINIMUM 4 separate rest breaks each hour with a minimum duration of 4 minutes each.
  • 2 HOUR MAXIMUM length of practice (not including rest breaks) if only one practice; practice not to exceed 1.5 hour (per practice) if 2 practices per day
  • Cold water immersion tub or other rapid cooling method prepared and ready
  • Consider competition alterations
  • Coordinate with contest officials to allow for additional breaks
  • Shorten length of sub-varsity competitions
  • Shorten length of course (Cross Country)
  • Football specific:
  • Protective equipment should be limited to helmets and shoulder pads, and these should be removed for conditioning.

 

87.8° - 89.7° F

  • Zone 4 – High Risk
  • 1 HOUR MAXIMUM length of practice (not including rest breaks)
  • MINIMUM 20 minutes of rest breaks distributed throughout the 1 hour of practice
  • Cold water immersion tub or other rapid cooling method prepared and ready
  • Consider competition alterations
  • Coordinate with contest officials to allow for additional breaks
  • Shorten length of sub-varsity competitions
  • Shorten length of course (Cross Country)
  • Consider delaying practice/competitions until a cooler WBGT zone is reached
  • Football specific:
  • No protective equipment should be worn.
  • No conditioning activities

≥ 89.8° F

  • Zone 5
  • No outdoor workouts.  Delay practice/competitions until a cooler WBGT zone is reached.

 

 

 

  • Per KSHSAA Rule 30-82, for the first five days of practice there can be only one practice.  This is a per individual rule.
  • Maximum of 2.5 hours of practice time when only one practice a day; (please note specific restrictions in each zone)
  • Maximum of four hours of cumulative practice time in any one day when 2 practices with at least an hour break between; (please note specific restrictions in each zone)
  • Pre/Post Weigh-in procedures are in place for the first month of the season
  • “Body cooling break”/Water Breaks at least every 20 minutes in each zone; water should be available for athletes at all times
  • “Body cooling break” is defined to be a period of inactivity for football that also includes at least removal of helmet but can also include removal of shoulder pads
  • Rest and recovery for athletes/coaches should take place in an air-conditioned classroom
  • Athletic Trainers to provide 15 minute in-service for all teams no later than second day of practice; information to review will include basic hydration expectations, warning signs for and recognition of heat illness, and the appropriate response to levels of heat illness.
  • Head and Assistant Coaches will review NFHS Heat Illness course annually
